Case Report Finasteride-associated Male Infertility

چکیده
Finasteride is a potent and specific inhibitor of the 5α-reductase enzyme in men. Clinical studies have shown that finasteride 1mg/day is effective for promoting hair growth in men with male pattern hair loss. However, there is a concern about the use of finasteride, especially in young fertile patients, because of its action on testosterone metabolism. This paper describes 3 cases of young patients who had very poor seminal quality during finasteride treatment (1 mg/day), and their seminal quality greatly improved after cessation of finasteride treatment. Two of them presented with a left varicocele and the other was obese. We hypothesize that finasteride may not dramatically change the spermatogenesis process in healthy men, but in patients with conditions related to infertility, an amplification of the negative influence of finasteride could occur. Future studies should be done to clarify the extent of the effect of finasteride in patients fertility problems.

Immunohistochemical Evaluation of Androgen Receptor and Nerve Structure Density in Human Prepuce from Patients with Persistent Sexual Side Effects after Finasteride Use for Androgenetic Alopecia
Finasteride is an inhibitor of 5-α-reductase used against male androgenetic alopecia (AGA). Reported side effects of finasteride comprise sexual dysfunction including erectile dysfunction, male infertility, and loss of libido. Recently these effects were described as persistent in some subjects. Molecular events inducing persistent adverse sexual symptoms are unexplored. This study was designed...
متن کاملHematuria and Hematospermia Associated with the Use of Finasteride for the Treatment of Androgenic Alopecia: A Case Report
In this report we address an unusual adverse effect of finasteride (Propecia 1 mg tablets) that was associated with painless hematuria and hematospermia in a 38-year-old healthy male during treatment of androgenic alopecia at a dose of 1 mg/day. It was found that the bleeding was linked to finasteride use as it occurred 2-3 days after use and stopped upon discontinuation of the drug. The patien...

Objective IL-1α produces by sertoli cells and considered as a growth factor for spermatogonia. In this study we investigated the association of C376A polymorphism in IL-1α gene with male infertility in men referring to Kashan IVF center which followed by an in silico approach. MaterialsAndMethods In a case-control study, 2 ml blood was collected from 230 fertile and 230 infertile men. After DNA...
متن کاملAndrogen levels and apoptosis in the testis during postnatal development of finasteride-treated male rat offspring.
INTRODUCTION The hormone-dependent events that occur throughout the first wave of spermatogenesis, such as the establishment of the number of Sertoli cells (SCs) and spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs) within the seminiferous cords and the setting up of the blood-testis barrier, are important for adult male fertility. Any changes in the T/DHT ratio can result in male subfertility or even infertili...
متن کاملDecreased alcohol consumption among former male users of finasteride with persistent sexual side effects: a preliminary report.
BACKGROUND There is a robust literature in rodents, but not in humans, on the interaction between finasteride and alcohol, particularly as it relates to neurosteroids. Finasteride has been shown to reduce alcohol intake and suppress alcohol preference in male mice. This study examines the role of finasteride in alcohol consumption in humans with male pattern hair loss. METHODS The subjects we...
